Good Morning Gators!
I watched someone unlock the door at 6am on the dot. I jumped out of the BREKFSTmobile grabbed a quick shot of the exterior and went in.
Mr A’s has re planted itself to its new Roselle location from its former Arlington Heights location. Increased rent and some other issues caused the sale and the move. On the plus side they now have a roomier more modern vibe. On the downside they have a roomier more modern vibe. I kind of liked the old circa 70’s building with the mixed up decor that didn’t quite know what it was after. It was a mix of cars, Rt 66, Three Stooges, Barney Fife, and miss matched furniture. The new place has a more traditional breakfast place familiarity. It just so happens that I have a couple of pictures of the old place for comparison. Lets take a look. The first 2 shots are of the old place. the rest are current.
OH WELL. Time marches on and let’s get going.
Mr A’s is your basic breakfast place. no frills, no nonsence. You are NOT going to find an inspired Lobster Roll Eggs Benedict like Bongo Room Nor are you going to find unbelievable Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Pancakes like WHISK. You are NOT going to see any art or nature inspired plating. You are NOT going to see a big booze menu. If you want to eat breakfast with Hipsters go somewhere else. Go to Lula
As usual I started with coffee, water, and a menu. While I perused the menu I listened to the country music emanating from the sound system. Bleh 4 I really don’t like country music. I won’t let this affect my breakfast enjoyment.
Bacon Benny: 2 Poached eggs, Candian Bacon, Avocado, Tomatoes, Hollandaise, Bacon Bits
Benedicts were NOT on the Arlington Heights Menu. This hoity–toity item was added for the Roselle crowd. Since it was just after 6am my entree arrived very quickly. The Hollandaise was just OK. 7 The eggs were just a tad under 7 The Muffin was toasted well which is actually rare even in upscale places 9 The Canadian bacon was flavorful 8 The Tomatoes and Avocado added a nice touch of freshness. Overall this was a pretty good combination. I’d order it again. 7/8
The Main Event
I get this every time I go to Mr A’s
#1: 3 Eggs and 1 King Size Slice of Ham & American Fries with Toast
This Giant size entree was $7.95 at the time of writing. They are nuts. They could get $10.95 for this. One order fills the table. If I ordered Pancakes instead of toast I would have been in trouble. I don’t know what they do if they have 4 people at a table.
Let’s start with the Toast. It’s TOAST. This is the kind of toast that they served at Diners in the 50’s. The same square slices of generic square bread. This is the weak link in the breakfast. On the plus side for us old people it’s very nostalgic. It’s the same toast we got as kids at the corner breakfast joint. 4 for the toast 9 for nostalgia. Served unbuttered of course. See my rant page.
The Eggs were cooked near perfect 9 No I did not order them Sunny side up. Very observant Gators. I ordered them over medium because I really wanted to just eat them not test the cook.
American Fries. Crisp on the outside fluffy and tender on the inside. If you look up American Fries in the dictionary there is a picture of Mr A’s American Fries. Every time I’ve had them they have been good. Always fresh, always tasty. 8/9
The HAM. This is why I go to Mr A’s. I don’t know where they source it from. I forgot to ask. I don’t know if it’s local Pigs and I don’t know if it’s from a farm that gives the Pigs names. I’ll ask next time I go. I actually don’t care but some of you may. I think I’ll call the pig that my Ham came from Frank. The Ham is very salty, porky, moist, and clovey. I think it could be one of those things that is polarizing. If you are used to sweet deli style Black Forest or Honey style ham you may not like it. This is more like salt cured country ham. It’s FANTASTIC. I’d give this meal a 10 but you know I won’t 9 (Maybe if the toast was better but probably not)
And in conclusion
I asked my server Jessica What I should order for sweets. They don’t have much. She suggested Cinnamon roll Pancakes which were not on the menu. My first thought was UGH Iv’e had these at a dozen joints. Between her recommendation and the fact that there really wasn’t anything on the menu that was exciting, I told her to bring them on. They arrived swiftly. They were fairly attractive but I smeared them with butter before I took pictures of them. (DOPE) They were Fluffy Puffy Tender Cinnamony and very tasty. Often times stuff like this really doesn’t need any enhancements but after tasting them with and without anything I preferred them with too much Butter and a little of the supplied warm fake maple syrup. Much to my surprise I’d put these in the top 3 of the best versions of this that I’ve had. I can’t say exactly what position because I haven’t ordered these in a long time. A Delicious 8/9 When you go to Mr A’s make sure to save room for these.
This was another delicious visit to mr A’s. As long as they keep serving that ham It will continue to be one of my destination places. Get over there
