Good Morning (sort of) Gators!
It’s 10am and I am standing with a gathering crowd outside of Stephanie Izard’s latest adventure. You may or may not know that Stephanie was the first female Chef to win Bravo’s Top Chef (season 4) She has a 3 restaurant string now. I have been to all 3 and reviewed number 2 (Little Goat Diner) twice. My Review of LG Diner Little Goat Diner is on the Gator’s favorites list. You’d think by now Stephanie would have dropped me a line to tell me how much she loves my reviews. :0)
I’m starting my review with 3 words of wisdom if you are considering going to DDG.
This Marks a point in Gator History. I really haven’t done a BRUNCH review yet. This is quite a departure from my usual Poached egg extravaganza. Come along if you will. Don’t worry I’ll be back on my Egg Game before you know it.
The place is super cute. a mix of faux and real Chinese decor. 9 The music is retro (at least for a lot of the patrons). 80’s pop, as in 80’s American pop. Kind of a surprise choice for the venue but hey it’s not my restaurant. 8 Love me some Tears for Fears and Dumplings.
Gotta Have Tea Right?
There is a strange absence of condiments seasonings and sweetner on the table. There IS a water bottle though
There be Chopsticks Here
But no knives forks or standard spoons. I am going to starve. It’s after 10 and I am really bad at the art of Chopsticking
The menu is actually much bigger than I expected. There were too many choices 6 On the plus side everyone in your party will be able to find something that pleases them. There are some pretty safe choices. And then there are…
You know that I am attracted to dishes that I haven’t tried before and Duck Tongues falls into that category. Just the thought of what I ordered Quacks me up. Put this dish on the Bill. OK enough Duck Jokes.
Crisp and pretty tasty. The Shishito Peppers added enough bite to cut the fat of the fryer. I tried to figure out what it reminded me of but I drew a blank. You’ll just have to order yourself some Duck Tongues. Unless you’re Chicken. Duck Tongues 8 Bad Jokes 3
Pig Face Buns
Exactly what it sounds like. The bun was Crispy and Flaky somewhat like puff pastry. The filling was savory and unctuous. The sauce provides a bit of Dijon style bite which was a good compliment. Another good choice 8
Shrimp and Peanut Dumplings with Peanut vinagrete Chiu Chow Fun Gor
This was a gift from our excellent server Jane and the kitchen. It was a good next course. Light Mildly Shrimpy with a little Peanut crunch 8
Beef Slap Noodles
Short rib ragu, luobo radish
This was the winning dish for me. A cornucopia of textures and flavor. The noodles were fresh and chewy the veggies were fresh and crisp. The pickled peppers added a bit of sharp contrast. The short rib was soft tender and beefy. Very tasty and a rare 9
Xiao Long Bao Pork and Crab Soup Dumplings
For those not familiar with this fun dish its like your standard dumpling with the inclusion of cold congealed broth. when the dumplings are steamed the soup melts and viola soup dumplings. The server instructed us to pick up the dumpling by the top place it in the spoon puncture it to let the soup run into the spoon then enjoy.
Personally I prefer to let them cool slightly then pop the whole thing in my mouth to let them explode with deliciousness.
They were porky and crabby. The broth was tasty and subtle. It didn’t overpower the filling. These were good and fun 8
Like a round glazed doughnut filled with chocolate cake frosting. Simple and not overly sweet. A good finish. 8
Our server gave us an actual table knife that I used to cut this open. Our young neighbors did not have this luxury. They sawed theirs in half with a chopstick. It was quite humorous.
Duck Duck Goat
